Google, LinkedIn, Telegram, Tinder… more and more sites are requiring phone number to register. This is an incursion in your privacy and a possible source of future spams.

Several sites propose to use some public disposable phone numbers, and displays the text messages your receive live on the screen.

But be aware that messages are disclosed publicly and most numbers are detected and rejected from the websites you are trying to register.

Cheap ‘0 credit’ prepaid SIM card

Another option for site which only require a phone number when you register (ex: Google) is to use pre-paid SIM card. Indeed, a pre-paid SIM card costs around 1 USD / EUR, and depending on local regulations, it can be used several days without registering.

Free private phone number

Google Voice

Both Google Voice and Skype provide phone numbers that can receive SMS Messages within USA. While Google Voice is free to use, Skype charges a monthly fee.

If you are looking for a reliable and free private phone number to receive SMS online that you alone have access to, you can try TextNow. On sign up for their free account, you will automatically get a free unique phone number and this is one of the major advantages. We have not tested this service yet.

Our advise

Once registered, activate a 2FA through TOTP, rather than through mobile SMS.
